4TH ANNUAL CURLING PARTY We
had a great turn-out to our Fourth Annual Christmas
Curling Party. Kudos to Tracy Dubnyk for starting
this great seasonal classic in 2001 (Tracy is now
in Alberta in training to become and RCMP). Ten
boats in our local fleet enjoyed a few ends of
curling and some tasty nosh at the scenic Hollyburn
Country Club in West Van. Thanks to the
Fleckensteins for arranging the venue, and to Gary
Suderman for accepting the challenge of organizing
the curling teams. The gift exchange had its usual
surprises and steals. Gwen Hardy did a brilliant
job of MCing and keeping her voice above the
competing NHL game on the big screens and big PA
system! Thanks to Gwen and Karen Barron for
the prizes, which were: Top
Boat in Fleet Season Standings: J&B
(again) Top
Boat in Big Fleet (Cdn and US Champs):
Babalouie Top
Skipper/Boat for Fleet Contribution: Robb
Bassett and Sail Naked for running the Canadian
Nationals Other
Fleet awards went to Most
Violent Crew: Delirious (Jane Mauchan for taking
out Cynthia's eye) Most
in Need of Health Inspection Below Deck:
Recidivist Most
Surprising Rule Breaker: National Measurer Lorne
Chapman for Plus Ten not measuring in
for Canadian Nationals Most
Organized Boat: Now Cleanest
Boat: Duct Tape Most
Last Minute: Babalouie (Blurr a close
second) Most
Jeckyl and Hyde: Mr. Wiggly The
Horny Helmet award was hotly contested with 5
nominations: Babalouie, J&B, Sail Naked, Plus
Ten, Mr. Wiggly. Fleck/Babalouie took the
prize with two wacky actions this season -
1) keel-hauling a child en route to
racing (and still racing) and not losing his role
as WVYC Junior Sailing Director, 2) leaving it too
late to measure-in his spinnaker for Canadians and
borrowing back a spinny sold to Razor's Edge (and
yet not returning it). Our
next social event will be the Ski to Sea in
February. The Fleet Executive is working on
the race schedule for 2006, and will circulate the
beginnings of it soon. 2005
J/24 CANADIANS - WRAP-UP Check
out the regatta web site for the details -
http://www.j24canadians.com This
event would not have succesfull without three
things, competitors, a great group of volunteers
and wonderful sponsors. We were
incredibly fortunate to have all
three. A large number of competitors go
a long way to ensuring that the racing is tight and
competitive, which is why we all sail the
boats. The event saw competitors from
Halifax, Toronto, Montana, Portland, Victoria, nine
boats from Seattle and of the course the local
Vancouver fleet.
The
great group of volunteers allowed the event to
progress smoothly and ensured that competitors and
sponsors had a fantastic time both on and off the
water. With that in mind, the
competitors, the organizing committee and club owe
the following people a huge thank you for their
effort and hard work in helping to ensure that the
2005 J24 Canadian Championships presented by BMW
was the success it was. Registration:
Valerie Linton, Sheryl Beadle, Jane Mauchan, Cathy
McPherson, Christina Melynk, Kimberly Payne and
Susanne Morris. Measurement:
Bruce Long, Greg Westerlund, Mike Bassett, Jaime
Tiampo, Eric, John Polglase, Phil Barron, Mark
Ozog, Tom Davis and William Phillips. Race
Committee: John Culter (Chairman), Aldyen, Darryl
Stodalka, Bev Parslow, Richard Kania, Fred Butler
and Melinda Straight. Also to Daniel
Cowan and Nathan and Nigel Tunnacliffe. Sponsor
Support: Len Kelsey, John Noble, Val Marie Couttes
(who also ran the regatta desk Saturday and Sunday)
and Stephen Bradner who provided his boat and
skippering expertise so that our sponsors could get
out and view racing on the Friday and Saturday.
Finally
a big thank you to the organizing committee whose
hard work paved the road for this fantastic
event. Rebecca Tunnacliffe-
registration, Lorne Chapman- Measurement and BMW,
Will Hardy- Website and moorage, Gwen Hardy-
Publicity, Jeff Griffiths- Graphic Design, Karen
Johnson- Volunteers and Danielle Roberts- Social.
Over
the course of the last week I have had the
opportunity to see the regatta evaluation forms and
read peoples thoughts on the event, based on what I
have seen I think we can all be really proud
of the event we hosted. Again thank you to
everyone involved for helping to make this event an
absolute pleasure to be a part of. Thank
you, Robb
