A few notes about the list server -
This is a service we enjoy courtesy of UBC with the help of Phil Eles, foredeck on Plus ten - it doesn't cost us anything and we get great benefit from the communication it provides for the fleet. We need to understand that this is a valuable contribution - not something that we pay for and have "rights" with.
As users we need to keep the list current - that means deleting your old email address when you change to a new one. Don't just subscribe with a new address and leave the old one there - it results on undeliverable mail arriving in our administrator's mailbox - a real pain for him.
To subscribe to the Vancouver J/24 list server:
Send an e-mail to:
Majordomo@interchange.ubc.cawith no subject and the following command in the body of your email message:
subscribe j24-vanbcMake sure that there is nothing else in the body of the message and NO SIGNATURE. The list server uses your return e-mail address to set you up on the distribution list.
To send a message to everyone subscribed to the list:
Send a normal email message addressed to:
j24-vanbc@interchange.ubc.cawith a normal subject and text message. See limitations below on Attachments and Contents.
To reply to, or continue a thread relating to a message received from the list:
Use the REPLY function in your e-mail program to send a reply only to the originator of the message that was distributed to you by the list server - and not the entire list.
Use the REPLY TO ALL function in your e-mail program to addreess a reply to the originator of the message that you received AND cc the list server. This way your message will be sent to everyone on the list.
Use some judgement here - should your reply go just to the originator of the post (message sent to you) or everybody on the list.
This is a change as of Feb. 11, 2003.
To unsubscribe:

For complete instructions on the list server
Send a message as above with no subject and the following command in the body of your email message:

Attachments
The list server does not like large attachments - over 400k - DON'T SEND THEM. For text stuff, copy it into the body of the email. Small PDF files solve most of the problems.
Content
The list server works best if we keep the content strictly to class business. This means that you don't use it to send out Virus Alerts - this is a poor practice anyway as most are bogus. We do not want your latest joke - no matter how funny - save it for the bar after racing. Just limit the messages to sailing matters and we'll all get more out of it.
We want to keep this working for us - so please play the game.
